While the most common linking verb is to be, other verbs can work as linking verbs (also known as copular verbs).&lt;br /&gt;In order to check if a verb is a linking verb, merely substitute it with the verb to be. If the sentence reads well, with no drastic change in the sense, the initial verb is a linking verb.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. Africa is a large continent. (linking verb)&lt;br /&gt;· "Africa" (subject) is linked to "a large continent" (subject complement).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. Backpacking has become less popular. (linking verb)&lt;br /&gt;· "Backpacking is less popular" – become can be substituted with the verb to be.&lt;br /&gt;· "Backpacking" (subject) is linked to "less popular" (subject complement).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other linking verbs, or copular verbs, are: to appear, to seem, to look (like), to sound (like), to feel, to taste (in the sense of having the taste of), to smell (in the sense of having the smell of) etc.&lt;br /&gt;TRANSITIVE VERB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Transitive verbs require the presence of an object. They can be finite or non-finite.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. Juggling three tennis balls and a chainsaw, the clown impressed the huge crowd.&lt;br /&gt;· "three tennis balls" and "a chainsaw" are the direct objects of the verb "juggling"&lt;br /&gt;· "the huge crowd" is the direct object of the verb "impressed"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MONOTRANSITIVE VERB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The classification is very clear for this kind of verb, as it only requires a direct object. There may be more than one direct object, but no indirect object, nor an object complement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I love you. Investigators found the evidence. They are going to sell pirated copies of the CD.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;DITRANSITIVE VERB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While the classification of this kind of verb can be misleading, a ditransitive verb is a transitive verb. However, it requires both a direct and an indirect object. There may be several objects, indirect and direct, but there must be at least one of each.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. The human resources department sent me an insurance policy.&lt;br /&gt;· me – indirect object&lt;br /&gt;· an insurance policy – direct object&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;COMPLEX TRANSITIVE VERB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This kind of verb is a transitive verb that requires a direct object and an object complement or an adverb.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. The judge found the plea outrageous (direct object + object complement).&lt;br /&gt;·        the plea – direct object&lt;br /&gt;·        outrageous - object complement*(see explanation below)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. She sent the documents to the government.&lt;br /&gt;·        the documents – direct object&lt;br /&gt;·        to the government – adverb phrase&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the specific examples above, the verbs "find" and "send" are considered complex transitive verbs. This does NOT mean that "find" and "send" are always complex transitive verbs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* One way to check if the word/phrase after the direct oibject is really a direct object is to try the following trick: 1) take the direct object and make it a subject...2) put the verb to be after it (conjugated)...3) use the object complement as a subject complement (adjective or noun)...if this makes a legitimate sentence, then you have just proven that the word "outrageous" is truly an object complement (in the first example).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) the plea...  2) the plea is....   3) the plea is outrageous (S + V + SubCompl)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;INTRANSITIVE VERB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Somewhat easier to identify than transitive verbs, intransitive verbs do not require an object nor a subject complement. Still, like any strong-headed, red-blooded, “testosteronized” male, I would still like to put my “two cents” in for consideration. After all, it is my damn blog!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My argument:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When verbs are used in the passive voice, the direct object (DO) becomes the subject. If there is no DO, the verb loses its transitivity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  THE JANITOR SAW SOME KIDS IN THE HALLWAY. – ACTIVE VOICE&lt;br /&gt; SOME KIDS WERE SEEN IN THE HALLWAY. – PASSIVE VOICE&lt;br /&gt;Active voice:&lt;br /&gt;- In the active voice, “the janitor” is the subject, governing the monotransitive verb (MTV) “see”. &lt;br /&gt;- “see”, as any MTV, requires a direct object (DO), in this case, “some kids”. &lt;br /&gt;- “in the hallway” is a prepositional phrase working as an adverbial phrase of place. &lt;br /&gt;Passive voice:&lt;br /&gt;- In the second example, “some kids” becomes the subject, governing the verb (number is important here - plural).&lt;br /&gt;- “in the hallway” continues to be a prepositional phrase working as an adverbial phrase of place.&lt;br /&gt;- WHERE IS THE DO? If a verb does not have a DO, how can it be transitive? &lt;br /&gt;- My argument is that a verb with no DO loses its transitivity, making it an intransitive verb. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BUT…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My esteemed colleague’s argument:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Verbs do not lose their transitivity when placed in the passive voice. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Using the same example from above, his theory is only mildly convincing. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  SOME KIDS WERE SEEN IN THE HALLWAY. – PASSIVE VOICE&lt;br /&gt;Active voice:&lt;br /&gt;We do not differ on the analysis of the active voice…,but…&lt;br /&gt;Passive voice:&lt;br /&gt;- In the second example, “some kids” becomes the PASSIVE SUBJECT, governing the verb, but still representing the DO.&lt;br /&gt;- Yes, the passive subject has, essentially, two jobs within the clause. The passive subject, while working as a subject, will always represent an object (direct or indirect). &lt;br /&gt;- Since there is an object, the verb maintains its transitivity. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The only way to carry out this kind of analysis is to revert back to the active voice. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nevertheless, his argument becomes somewhat more convincing when the verb is a ditransitive verb (DTV).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  THE ARMY ISSUED THE SOLDIERS NEW UNIFORMS. – ACTIVE VOICE&lt;br /&gt; THE SOLDIERS WERE ISSUED NEW UNIFORMS. – PASSIVE VOICE&lt;br /&gt;Active voice:&lt;br /&gt;- In the active voice, “the army” is the subject, governing the ditransitive verb (DTV) “issue”. &lt;br /&gt;- “issue”, as any DTV, requires a direct object (DO), in this case, “new uniforms”, and an indirect object (IO), “the soldiers” (The IO always receives the DO). &lt;br /&gt;Passive voice:&lt;br /&gt;- In the second example, “the soldiers” becomes the PASSIVE SUBJECT, governing the verb, but still representing the IO.&lt;br /&gt;- “new uniforms” is still the DO. This is where his theory really does prove true. Any verb with an object must be transitive. Again, you can really only understand this by reverting back to the active voice. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I therefore concede defeat. That is, if the RP represents the OBJECT (objeto) or COMPLEMENT (predicado), it is possible to omit it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THAT NEW FILE-O-FAX “THAT” YOU BOUGHT LAST WEEK HAS GONE MISSING.  &lt;br /&gt;- “that you bought last week” is the finite restrictive adjective clause. Within this clause, “THAT” represents the direct object of the verb “buy”, which is a monotransitive verb (MTV) that requires a DO. &lt;br /&gt;- “You bought a new file-o-fax last week. It has gone missing” is the essence of the sentence, but, in the example above, “That new file-o-fax” is the subject for the verb phrase “has gone” (That new file-o-fax has gone missing). Thus, it cannot be the DO for “buy”. “THAT” takes the place of “that new file-o-fax” in the adjective clause.&lt;br /&gt;- Finally, as it works as a DO in the adjective clause, it can be omitted: &lt;br /&gt;“That new file-o-fax you bought last week has gone missing”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let’s see an example in which the RP cannot be omitted.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SHE HAD NEVER MET A GUY “THAT” HAD TREATED HER WITH SUCH CLASS. &lt;br /&gt;- “That had treated her with such class” is the finite restrictive adjective clause. Within this clause, “THAT” represents the subject of the verb phrase “had treated”. &lt;br /&gt;- “He had treated her with such class and she had never met any guy like that before” is the essence of the sentence, but, in the example above, “a guy” is the object for the verb phrase “had met”. Thus, it cannot be the subject for “had treated”. “THAT” takes the place of “a guy” in the adjective clause.&lt;br /&gt;- Finally, as it works as a subject in the adjective clause, it CANNOT be omitted. The following sentence does not make sense in English: “She had never met a guy had treated her with such class”. “That” in this case is necessary!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;OMISSION OF SCs (THAT)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THAT as an SC can be omitted pretty much always. SCs usually do not have an explicit syntactical function within the subordinate clause. Their function is more related to the connection (subordination) to the main idea within the sentence, or to that idea to which it is subordinated. That is, it is possible to omit the SC in most cases. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  THE COPS KNOW “THAT” THE CARTEL INVESTS MONEY AROUND THE WORLD.&lt;br /&gt;- “that the cartel invests money around the world” is the finite noun clause working as the direct object (DO) of the monotransitive verb (MTV) “know”. Within the DO, “that” has no syntactic function. It is not the subject (the cartel), nor the DO (money), nor the adverbial idea (around the world). &lt;br /&gt;- Finally, as it has no syntactical function, it CAN be omitted. “The cops know the cartel invests money around the world”. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let’s see a case in which THAT as an SC can be omitted, but such omission may cause some ambiguity. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Theodore Bernstein lists three conditions in which the SC “that” should be maintained:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bernstein,Theodore. Dos, Don'ts &amp; Maybes of English Usage, Gramercy Books: New York. 1999. p. 217.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) When a time element intervenes between the verb and a clause.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. PHILLIP TOLD ME LAST WEEK THAT HE WAS PLANNING TO TAKE MONDAY OFF.  &lt;br /&gt;- The position of the adverbial time element "last week" separates the verb “told” and the direct object “that he was planning to take Monday off”&lt;br /&gt;- It is possible to omit the SC, however, the sentence losses its flow. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2) When the verb of the clause is long delayed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE RESEARCH SHOWED THAT ANIMALS LIVING CLOSE TO BARREN AND DESOLATE AREAS DURING THE JURASSIC PERIOD TENDED TO BE CARNIVORES. &lt;br /&gt;- The distance between the subject "animals" and its verb "tended" is so far that it is recommended that the SC not be omitted. &lt;br /&gt;- It is possible to omit the SC, however, the sentence losses its flow. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3) When a second “that” can clear up who said or did what.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE SOCCER PLAYER SAID THAT THE COACH HAD NOT BEEN FOCUSING ON THE YOUNGER PLAYERS’ PERFORMANCE AND THAT THEIR GAME HAD SUFFERED AS A CONSEQUENCE.&lt;br /&gt;- Did the soccer player say that their game had suffered or was the suffering a result of what he said about the coach? If THAT does not follow a noun, chances are it is a subordinating conjunction and not a relative pronoun. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I THOUGHT THAT YOU HAD LEFT.  &lt;br /&gt;- There is no noun preceding THAT, therefore it is a subordinating conjunction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another way is to check if THAT is a relative pronoun or a subordinating conjunction is to verify if the clause following THAT can be used as an independent clause (excluding THAT, of course). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I THOUGHT THAT YOU HAD LEFT.&lt;br /&gt;- “You had left” can be an independent clause (excluding THAT); therefore, THAT is a subordinating conjunction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yet another way to check if THAT is a relative pronoun or a subordinating conjunction is to verify if the word THAT can be exchanged for the word WHICH.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  I HAVE NEVER EATEN MEAT THAT WAS SO TENDER. &lt;br /&gt;- I have never eaten meat WHICH* was so tender.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*NB: This is merely to check if THAT is a relative pronoun. Basically, WHICH is used when referring to the previous sentence (this often carries an abstract idea), while THAT usually refers to the previous noun. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. HE DELETED THE PICTURE, WHICH UPSET ME.  &lt;br /&gt;- The fact he deleted it made me feel bad. (There is a tendency in English to use WHICH in non-restrictive adjective clauses)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. HE DELETED THE PICTURE THAT UPSET ME. &lt;br /&gt;- The picture upset me. This cannot be done with any other relative pronoun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I CLEANED A POOL IN WHICH THERE WERE TWO DUCKS AND A SHARK. &lt;br /&gt;- “in which” represents “in a pool” in the adjective clause. In English, they are who, whom, which, whose, that and Ø (zero). They always refer back to a noun, noun phrase, or a noun clause. In special cases, “where” and “when” can be used as relative pronouns. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE PERSON WHO KNOWS MORE ABOUT THIS IS ABSENT.&lt;br /&gt;- “who knows more about this” refers back to the noun phrase “the person”. “This” person is absent. Another person is present, but doesn’t know more about this matter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE PEOPLE WITH WHOM I WORK ARE NOT COMING.&lt;br /&gt;- “with whom I work” refers back to the noun phrase “the people”. “These” people are not coming. Others are coming, but I don’t work with them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. MY CAR WASN’T RUNNING WELL, WHICH MADE ME HORRIBLY LATE.&lt;br /&gt;- “which made me horribly late” refers back to the noun clause “My car wasn’t running well”. “This” made me horribly late.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. DOGS WHOSE OWNERS LEAVE THEM IN KENNELS FOR HOLIDAYS GET LONELY.&lt;br /&gt;- “whose owners leave them in kennels for holidays” refers back to the noun “dogs”. “These” dogs get lonely. Other dogs do not.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE MONEY THAT I SPEND IS MINE. &lt;br /&gt;- “that I spend” refers back to the noun phrase “the money”. “This” money is mine. Other money is not mine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I COULDN’T HEAR A WORD Ø YOU SAID. &lt;br /&gt;- “you said” refers back to the noun phrase “a word”. “This” word I could not hear. I could hear other words (from other people). &lt;br /&gt;- This sentence could be different: I couldn’t hear a word “that” you said. The relative pronoun “that” can be absent because it is working as a direct object within the adjective clause. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SEVERAL BANKS WHERE SIMILAR SCANDALS HAD HAPPENED WERE INVESTIGATED. &lt;br /&gt;- “where similar scandals had happened” refers back to the noun phrase “Several banks”. “These” banks were investigated. Others were not.&lt;br /&gt;- Although “where” is usually an adverbial idea, sometimes it is used to describe (adjective idea) a noun that refers to a place, thus making it work as a normal relative pronoun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. 1963 IS THE YEAR WHEN J. F. KENNEDY WAS HOT IN DALLAS. &lt;br /&gt;- “when J. F. Kennedy was hot in Dallas” refers back to the noun phrase “the year”. “This” is the year it happened. Not any other year.&lt;br /&gt;- Although “when” is usually an adverbial idea, sometimes it is used to describe (adjective idea) a noun that refers to a time, thus making it work as a normal relative pronoun. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Relative pronouns can act as subjects in the adjective clause.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE TELEPHONE THAT IS IN THE BEDROOM IS BROKEN. &lt;br /&gt;- “that” refers back to the noun phrase “the telephone”&lt;br /&gt;- The relative pronoun “that” is working as the subject of the adjective clause “that is in the bedroom”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When relative pronouns work as objects, they may be removed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE TELEPHONE (THAT) YOU BOUGHT IS BROKEN. &lt;br /&gt;- “that” refers back to the noun phrase “the telephone”&lt;br /&gt;- “that” represents the direct object of the transitive verb “bought”. When these are used with NO INDEPENDENT CLAUSE to support them, they become SENTENCE FRAGMENTS. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When the verb is not conjugated to concord with a subject, there is no sentence idea, but rather a FRAGMENTED IDEA, that is, a SENTENCE FRAGMENT. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SHAKESPEARE HAVING PUBLISHED HIS FIRST PLAY. &lt;br /&gt;- “Shakespeare” is the subject&lt;br /&gt;- “having published” is not a conjugated idea, therefore, this is a SENTENCE FRAGMENT. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A mechanism you can use to check if the verb is conjugated to concord with the verb is to simplify the two parts. &lt;br /&gt;- “Shakespeare” can be changed to the pronoun “I”, and “having published” can be changed to the verb “speak”. For this to work, you must maintain the same form for the verb, that is, “speaking”. &lt;br /&gt;- “Shakespeare having” = “I speaking” - It is easy to see that this is NOT A SENTENCE in English, because the verb is not conjugated to concord with the subject. Most adverbial clauses of place are introduced by the subordinating conjunctions WHERE or WHEREVER. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THEY WENT WHEREVER THEY COULD FIND WORK.&lt;br /&gt;- “wherever they could find work” modifies the main clause in terms of place.&lt;br /&gt;- “went” is an intransitive verb that usually requires an adverbial idea. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. WHERE THE FIRE HAD BEEN, WE SAW NOTHING BUT THE BLACKENED RUINS. &lt;br /&gt;- “Where the fire had been” modifies the main clause in terms of place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WHERE can be misleading due to the fact it can be used as a subordinating conjunction in NOUN CLAUSES. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE POLICE NEVER FOUND WHERE THE MONEY HAD BEEN HIDDEN. &lt;br /&gt;- “where the money had been hidden” is the direct object of the transitive verb “find.” Therefore, it is not an adverbial clause of time, but rather a finite noun clause working as a direct object. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WHERE can also be used as a RELATIVE PRONOUN.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THIS IS THE DEPARTMENT WHERE WE DEAL WITH CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS. &lt;br /&gt;- “where we deal with customer complaints” is qualifying the noun phrase “the department.” &lt;br /&gt;- As “the department” is a vague idea, the clause in question is restricting it. They are usually introduced by subordinating conjunctions that refer to time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some examples are:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;AFTER she waxed her legs, she clipped her toenails.&lt;br /&gt;I had never seen such a big one BEFORE I met you. &lt;br /&gt;SINCE the caretaker left, we haven’t been able to tend the yard.&lt;br /&gt;Ecstasy wasn’t available UNTIL the drug MDMH was discovered.&lt;br /&gt;WHEN man gets to Mars, we will be old and gray.&lt;br /&gt;AS SOON AS we get there, I’ll change the baby’s diaper.&lt;br /&gt;I haven’t been to a roaring party SINCE my high school reunion.&lt;br /&gt;WHILE her attention was momentarily adverted, I swiped some gum.&lt;br /&gt;SOONER THAN you realize, you’ll be as tall as me.&lt;br /&gt;*NO SOONER had the firms merged, (WHEN) I was fired.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*NB: This “complex subordinating conjunction”, when used in the initial position, requires the use of an “inversion”. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. NO SOONER WILL YOU GET THE PROMOTION AND THE COMPANY WILL GO BELLY UP.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In inversions, the AUXILIARY VERB (will, in this case) is placed before the subject (you), as in question format. In the standard order, the sentence would be:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. YOU WILL NO SOONER GET THE PROMOTION AND THE COMPANY WILL GO BELLY UP.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When can be misleading due to the fact that it sometimes works as a subordinating conjunction for noun clauses. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE LADY AT THE CHECK-IN KNOWS WHEN THE PLANE IS SCHEDULED TO LAND.&lt;br /&gt;- “when the plane is scheduled to land” is the direct object of the transitive verb “know”. Therefore, it is not an adverbial clause of time, but rather a finite noun clause working as a direct object. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And it (the word WHEN) can be a relative pronoun when it describes a noun that refers to time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE TOOK A RISK AT A TIME WHEN ALL HOPE WAS LOST.&lt;br /&gt;- “when all hope was lost” is the finite restrictive adjective clause describing the noun phrase “a time”&lt;br /&gt;- “at a time” is a prepositional phrase working as an adverbial phrase of time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NON-FINITE ADVERBIAL CLAUSES OF TIME&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is common to reduce these clauses with the GERUND and the PAST PARTICIPLE.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. WHEN CHOOSING YOUR WORDS, YOU SHOULD CONSIDER HER EMOTIONAL STATE. &lt;br /&gt;- “When choosing your words” is the adverbial clause of time modifying the main clause “you should consider her emotional state.” &lt;br /&gt;- “When choosing your words” has been reduced by the gerund. In a finite format, it would be “When you choose your words.” &lt;br /&gt;- “When choosing your words”, therefore, is a non-finite adverbial clause of time reduced by the gerund. &lt;br /&gt;- “When” is a subordinating conjunction that can be used together with the reduced form. Not all subordinating conjunctions are as flexible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. HAVING UNDERSTOOD THE METHOD, HE WENT ON TO FINE TUNE ALL THE DETAILS. &lt;br /&gt;- “Having understood the method” has been reduced by the gerund. In a finite format it would be “When he had understood the method.”&lt;br /&gt;- “Having understood the method”, therefore, is a non-finite adverbial clause of time reduced by the gerund.&lt;br /&gt;- As you can see, it is possible to reduce perfect tenses using the gerund. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. PLACED UNDER A MORE FLUORESCENT LIGHT, THE COLOR BECOMES MORE VIBRANT. &lt;br /&gt;- “Placed under a more fluorescent light” has been reduced by the past participle. In a finite format, it would be “When the color is placed under a more fluorescent light.”&lt;br /&gt;- “Placed under a more fluorescent light”, therefore, is a non-finite adverbial clause of time reduced by the past participle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UNTIL x BY&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These two ADVERBS OF TIME can be very confusing. UNTIL gives the idea of CONTINUITY. Finite adverbial clauses usually contain a SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION (see entry on SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION), which makes it easier to identify. Non-finite adverbial clauses, however, hardly ever (almost never, almost) have a subordinating conjunction, making them more difficult to identify and more open to interpretation. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;FINITE ADVERBIAL CLAUSES&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most finite adverbial clauses have a SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION, which will aid in determining the adverbial idea.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. DESPITE THE FACT (THAT) SHE SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN FISH, I LIKE HER.&lt;br /&gt;- “Despite the fact (that)” is a subordinating conjunction used to show CONTRAST&lt;br /&gt;- “Despite the fact (that) she smells like rotten fish” is a finite adverbial clause of contrast.&lt;br /&gt;- “I like her” is the main clause.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NON-FINITE ADVERBIAL CLAUSES&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reducing adverbial clauses is common, but confusing. They can be reduced in three ways: GERUND, PAST PARTICIPLE, and INFINITIVE. When this occurs, quite often the SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION is removed, thus leaving the sentence open to interpretation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SORTING THROUGH ALL HER BELONGINGS, SHE FOUND THE OLD PHOTO OF HER FIRST BEAU. &lt;br /&gt;- “Sorting through all her belongings” is a dependent clause that can be interpreted THREE ways: &lt;br /&gt;1) “By sorting through all her belongings” (referring to the MANNER in which she found the photo) – non-finite adverbial clause of manner reduced by gerund; By using coordinating conjunctions this way, sentences are made shorter for objectivity. Grammarians argue over whether there is true ellipsis or mere joining of certain terms.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. JOHN AND PETER DANCED THE TANGO.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This could be interpreted as “John danced the tango and Peter danced the tango”, thus proving the use of AND for ellipsis. However, this may be interpreted as the simple joining of two nouns, “John and Peter”. This may indicate that John and peter danced together. In syntax, this would then be considered a compound subject.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Others words may be used as coordinating conjunctions:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. PRICING BABIES SOUNDS ODD, BUT IT IS BECOMING MORE COMMON WHEN PLANNING A FAMILY.&lt;br /&gt;- “but” joins two independent clauses, but shows an idea of contrast between them&lt;br /&gt;- The independent clause “Pricing babies sounds odd”  is linked to the other independent clause “it is becoming more common”. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the example above, “yet” could substitute the coordinating conjunction “but”. It (yet) would work as a coordinating conjunction for contrast, despite the fact that it is generally defined as an adverb. Other words that can function as coordinating conjunctions include: as well as, however, in addition to, together with, therefore, nor, while etc. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Coordinating conjunctions can only link ideas of equal nature (2+ nouns, 2+ verbs, 2+ clauses, 2+ phrases, 2+ dependent clauses, 2+ appositives etc). This connection is known as syndetic:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I LIKE PLAYING GOLF AND SOCCER.&lt;br /&gt;- The noun “golf” is linked (coordinated) to the other noun “soccer” by the coordinating conjunction “and” (two nouns/direct objects are coordinated).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another interpretation is that “I like playing” is in ellipsis in the second sentence, that is:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I LIKE PLAYING GOLF AND I LIKE PLAYING SOCCER. &lt;br /&gt;Coordination is used for ellipsis to avoid such tiresome repetition (two clauses are coordinated).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recalling that coordinating conjunctions can only link ideas of equal nature, in the first example two nouns were coordinated. In the second example, two clauses were coordinated. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. IF TRAINEES WERE ALLOWED AND IF THEY KNEW WHAT TO DO, WE COULD GIVE THIS TASK AND OTHER NASTY JOBS TO THEM. &lt;br /&gt;- The two dependent clauses “If trainees were allowed” and “if they knew what to do” are linked by the coordinating conjunction “and”. &lt;br /&gt;- The two noun phrases (two direct objects) “this task” and “other nasty jobs” are linked by the coordinating conjunction “and” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE, COMPUTER MONITORS AND KEYBOARDS, WAS BEING SOLD AT VERY REASONABLE PRICES. &lt;br /&gt;- The two appositives "computer monitors" and "keyboards" are linked by the coordinating conjunction "and". &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE JANITOR, THE CARETAKER, THE DOORMAN OR THE SUPERVISOR WILL HAVE TO COVER FOR THE GARAGE ATTENDANT NEXT WEEK. &lt;br /&gt;- The noun phrase (subject) "the supervisor" is coordinated to the previous three noun phrases (also subjects). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SYNDETIC – common use of coordinators&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In English, SYNDETIC coordination is possible when there are two ideas, but not so common if there are more than two. With three or more coordinated ideas, it is more common to apply an ASYNDETIC structure with a coordinator between the last two elements. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  WE WENT TO PARIS AND MOSCOW.    SYNDETIC USE&lt;br /&gt; WE WENT TO PARIS AND MOSCOW AND STOCKHOLM.  NOT COMMON*&lt;br /&gt; WE WENT TO PARIS, MOSCOW AND STOCKHOLM.  ASYNDETIC &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* This is excessive use of coordinators in English. Young children often speak this way. “Today we played soccer and we painted flowers and we fed the rabbits and we went to mall and we had lunch at McDonalds and we…etc”. This is not desirable in English, especially written English. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;ASYNDETIC – used to avoid using coordinators &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is more common in English due to the pure objectivity of the language. In sentences with more than 2 ideas, rather than repeat the coordinating conjunction, it is more common to use commas, semi-colons and full colons to shorten (see explanation of ELLIPSIS) ideas. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  ASYNDETIC - Goulash is a Hungarian dish that contains paprika, sour cream, pepper, salt, curry and meat.    &lt;br /&gt; SYNDETIC - Goulash is a Hungarian dish that contains paprika and contains sour cream and contains pepper and contains salt and contains curry and contains meat.       &lt;br /&gt;The SYNDETIC example above shows the excessive use of the coordinator “and”, which, when used correctly, is referred to as POLYSUNDETIC (see below). In this case, an ASYNDETIC form is less repetitive and more objective.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;POLYSYNDETIC&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the excessive, but CORRECT USE of a syndetic structure (coordinators) aimed at causing an effect, usually of excessiveness (repetition, continuity etc.).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  He just talks and talks and talks. (Non-stop talking)&lt;br /&gt; The movie went on and on and on. (The movie was very long)&lt;br /&gt; They always want ice cream or chips or to go to the park or to watch TV. (They always want something)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;COMPOUND SENTENCES&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Compound sentences are made up of at least two simple sentences. There must be at least two independent ideas, that is, independent clauses. A compound sentence occurs when independent clauses are linked by coordinating conjunctions. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I HAD THE SAME IDEA, BUT I DIDN’T WRITE IT DOWN. &lt;br /&gt;- "I had the same idea" is an independent clause&lt;br /&gt;- "I didn’t write it down" is an independent clause&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Coordinating conjunctions are not included, that is, are not considered part of the simple sentences that constitute a compound sentence. Although not always the case, relative pronouns are very commonly used in adjective clauses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE WOMAN WHO I MARRIED IS MAGIC.&lt;br /&gt;- “who I married” is a group of words with a verb (clause) that qualifies “The woman” (noun phrase). Therefore, it is a clause modifying a noun, or an adjective clause. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are two types of adjective clauses: Non-restrictive (Non-defining) and Restrictive (Defining).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NON-RESTRICTIVE ADJECTIVE CLAUSES (NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These clauses merely add extra information, which is not necessarily needed. Therefore, they are usually separated by (or between) commas, as if the adjective clauses could be removed from the sentence, without affecting the meaning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE MOON, WHICH IS MADE OF GREEN CHEESE, IS FULL TONIGHT.&lt;br /&gt;- As “the moon” is a noun phrase that is quite specific in itself, it is not necessary to restrict its meaning. “Which is made of green cheese” can be removed from the sentence without affecting the central idea of the main clause (The moon is full tonight).                    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. MADONNA, WHO IS MARRIED TO GUY RITCHIE, HAS RECORDED ANOTHER ALBUM.&lt;br /&gt;- Since "Madonna” is a clear noun (that is, everyone thinks of the same person when they hear this), there is no need to restrict the meaning. “Who is married to Guy Ritchie” can be removed from the sentence without affecting the central idea of the main clause (Madonna has recorded another album).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. ZOOMP, WHERE STANLEY SHOPS, SELLS DESIGNER CLOTHES.&lt;br /&gt;- As the name of the store “Zoomp” is very clear and difficult to confuse with another store (in this case), it is not necessary to restrict its meaning. “Where Stanley shops” can be removed from the sentence without affecting the central idea of the main clause (Zoomp sells designer clothes).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. INDUSTRIAL SECTORS, THAT DEPENDED ON RAW MATERIALS FOR PRODUCTION, HAVE UNDERGONE MAJOR CHANGES THE LOGISTICS OF THEIR BUSINESSES.&lt;br /&gt;- This sentence leads us to believe that ALL industrial sectors have undergone major changes the logistics of their businesses. The presence of commas leads us to understand that “that depended on raw materials for production” is extra information (a non-restrictive adjective clause). Therefore, it can be removed without affecting the central idea of the main clause (Industrial sectors have undergone major changes the logistics of their businesses). Thus, we understand that ALL industrial sectors have undergone major changes the logistics of their businesses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NB: Commas are used in non-restrictive clauses to show the “removability” of the information that follows (or that is in between them).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;RESTRICTIVE ADJECTIVE CLAUSES (DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Restrictive clauses, as the name suggests, aim at limiting the broad meaning of the noun. That is, they provide information that is aimed at being more specific in relation to the noun they modify. Because the noun is vague or not specific, the adjective clause helps to identify or give specifics about the noun. If removed, the meaning of the sentence will suffer a change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g.  THE EXAM THAT WE DID YESTERDAY WAS TOUGH.&lt;br /&gt;- “that we did yesterday” restricts (limits) the broad idea of “The exam”. Of all the exams I could be referring to, I refer only to that one we did yesterday. Without restricting “the exam”, we are unsure of which exam “was tough”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE WOMAN WHO IS STANDING NEXT TO YOUR NIECE IS MY SISTER-IN-LAW.&lt;br /&gt;- “who is standing next to your niece” restricts (limits) the broad idea of “The woman”. Of all the sisters-in-law I could be referring to, I refer only to that one who is standing next to your niece. Without restricting “the woman”, we are unsure which woman “is my sister-in-law”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE HOUSE WHOSE ROOF WAS DAMAGED HAS NOW BEEN REPAIRED.&lt;br /&gt;- “whose roof was damaged” restricts (limits) the broad idea of “The house”. Of all the houses I could be referring to, I refer only to that one whose roof was damaged. Without restricting “the house”, we are unsure which house “has now been repaired”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE CITY WHERE I GREW UP IS THE THIRD LARGEST IN THE WORLD.&lt;br /&gt;- “where I grew up” restricts (limits) the broad idea of “The city”. Of all the cities I could be referring to, I refer only to that one where I grew up. Without restricting “the city”, we are unsure which city “is the third largest in the world”.&lt;br /&gt;NB: The word "where", in this specific case, is working as a relative pronoun. Not always does it work as a relative pronoun. Here it is referring back to the noun phrase "the city" and thus modifies it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE INFORMATION THAT I GOT WAS VERY HUSH-HUSH.&lt;br /&gt;- “that I got” restricts (limits) the broad idea of “The information”. Of all the information I could be referring to, I refer only to that information that I got. Without restricting “the information”, we are unsure which information “was very hush-hush”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NB: No commas should be used in restrictive adjective clauses, as removal of the restrictive clause is not recommended.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;COMMAS IN ADJECTIVE CLAUSES&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes, placing commas--a fact that will change a restrictive clause to a non-restrictive clause--is often open to interpretation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE SUPERMARKETS, THAT OFFER DISCOUNTS, ARE EXTREMELY CROWDED.        &lt;br /&gt;- The presence of commas in the example above leads us to believe that all supermarkets are extremely crowded, that is, as “that offer discounts” is extra information (a non-restrictive adjective clause), it can be removed without affecting the central idea of the main clause (The supermarkets are extremely crowded). Thus, we understand that ALL supermarkets are crowded.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE SUPERMARKETS THAT OFFER DISCOUNTS ARE EXTREMELY CROWDED.&lt;br /&gt;- The lack of commas in the above example leads us to believe that only some supermarkets are extremely crowded, that is, as “that offer discounts” is specific, limiting information (a restrictive adjective clause), it cannot be removed without affecting the central idea of the main clause. NON-FINITE</title><content type='html'>FINITE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If a verb is finite, it has been conjugated, that is, it shows time (past, present, future) and person (1st, 2nd, 3rd, singular or plural). It is also (usually) accompanied by a subject.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN A HUMP-BACK WHALE.&lt;br /&gt;- "have never seen" – time (tense): present perfect / person: 3rd person plural&lt;br /&gt;- "They" – subject &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fact that a verb is in the finite form has nothing to do with its type. That is, monotransitive, ditransitive, complex transitive, intransitive and linking verbs can all be put into the finite form. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NON-FINITE (REDUCED)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If a verb is non-finite, it is not conjugated, that is, it does NOT show time NOR person. It can only appear in one of the following four forms: infinitive, gerund (present participle), past participle or bare infinitive. It is NOT usually accompanied by a subject. Non-finite verbs are never the main verb.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. WHILE SIGNING THE APPLICATION FORM, SHE REALIZED SHE HAD LEFT HER CV AT HOME. &lt;br /&gt;- "realized" - time (tense): simple past; person: 3rd person singular (main verb); "she" is the subject = FINITE&lt;br /&gt;- "had left" - time (tense): past perfect; person: 3rd person singular; "she"  is the subject = FINITE&lt;br /&gt;- "signing" – no time (tense); no person; gerund form; no subject = NON-FINITE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. NOT TO SEND A REPLY WOULD BE RUDE. &lt;br /&gt;- "Not to send" – no time (tense); no person; infinitive form; no subject = NON-FINITE&lt;br /&gt;- "would be" - time (tense): past perfect; person: 3rd person singular (main verb); a reply  is the subject = FINITE&lt;br /&gt;NB: Negative infinitives should place the word "NOT" before the entire ‘to-infinitive’, and not separating the ‘to’ from the verb. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THEY MADE THE GIRL CRY. &lt;br /&gt;- "made" - time (tense): simple past; person: 3rd person plural (main verb); "they" is the subject = FINITE&lt;br /&gt;- "cry" - no time (tense); no person; bare infinitive form; no subject = NON-FINITE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE COLORS MIXED WITH GLITTER SHONE BRIGHTLY. &lt;br /&gt;- "shone" - time (tense): simple past; person: 3rd person plural (main verb); "the colors" is the subject = FINITE&lt;br /&gt;- "mixed" - no time (tense); no person; past participle form; no subject = NON-FINITE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NB: The past participle form often has an idea of passive voice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE COLORS (THAT WERE) MIXED WITH GLITTER SHONE BRIGHTLY. &lt;br /&gt;- "that were mixed" is the passive voice. It is always located after the object (postmodifier) and can be a noun, noun phrase, noun clause, adjective or adjective phrase. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As this syntax element complements objects, it is necessary for the verb to be a transitive verb (in fact, the verb is considered a CXTV). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A way to CHECK if the element following the object is an OBJECT COMPLEMENT is to form a separate sentence using the object and the supposed complement with the verb "to be". The main thing to remember is that a complement completes an idea, whether it is a phrase, a clause or a word. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SUBJECT COMPLEMENT &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While transitive verbs require an object, linking verbs can require a subject complement. The subject complement does exactly what the name suggests, it complements (completes) the subject, giving it a quality or a name. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SHE WAS EXHAUSTED. &lt;br /&gt;- "Exhausted" gives a quality to the subject (she = exhausted)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE PUNCH SMELLS STRANGE. &lt;br /&gt;- "Strange" gives a quality to the subject (the punch = strange)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THEIR DEPARTMENT BECAME THE CENTRAL AREA FOR CUSTOMER RELATIONS. &lt;br /&gt;- "The central area for customer relations" gives its subject a name.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;ADJECTIVES (QUALITY) AS SUBJECT COMPLEMENTS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When a complement gives a subject a quality, it is usually an adjective, or an adjective phrase.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. HER VOICE SOUNDED EXTREMELY MODERN. &lt;br /&gt;- "Extremely modern" gives a quality to the subject (her voice = extremely modern)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. MY SON SEEMED LONELY. &lt;br /&gt;- "Lonely" gives a quality to the subject (my son = lonely)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE WAKE WAS GHASTLY. &lt;br /&gt;- "Ghastly" gives a quality to the subject (the wake = ghastly)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE SUBTITLES WERE OUT OF SYNC. &lt;br /&gt;- "Out of sync" gives a quality to the subject (the subtitles = out of sync)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NOUNS (NAMES) AS SUBJECT COMPLEMENTS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When a complement gives a subject a name, it is usually a noun, a noun phrase or a noun clause. The verb must be conjugated to agree with the subject for this idea to be complete.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SHAKESPEARE WAS A PLAYWRIGHT.&lt;br /&gt;- "Shakespeare" is the  subject.    &lt;br /&gt;- "was" is the verb (conjugated to agree with the subject)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SIMPLE SENTENCES&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Simple sentences are made up of just one clause (verb idea), that is, although there may be more than one subject, there is only one clause.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. IT MUST HAVE BEEN WINDY LAST NIGHT.&lt;br /&gt; - There is one subject “It” and one verb idea “must have been”.&lt;br /&gt;- Although there are three elements to make the verb "must have been", it is still only one clause (verb idea).&lt;br /&gt;- If a sentence has more than one clause, it is not a simple sentence.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. BOTH BONDI AND SURFERS PARADISE HAVE BEEN MARKETED AS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES IN AUSTRALIA.&lt;br /&gt;- There are two subjects “Bondi” and “Surfers Paradise”, but only one verb idea “have been marketed”.&lt;br /&gt;- Again, despite all the elements used to make the subjects and the verb idea, it is still only one clause.&lt;br /&gt;- It is a simple sentence.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. JOHN HAS NEVER SEEN THE NORTHERN LIGHTS AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN AIRPLANE.&lt;br /&gt;- As there are two clauses, this CANNOT be classified as a simple sentence.&lt;br /&gt;- "has never seen" is a separate verb idea to "has never been".&lt;br /&gt;- This is a compound sentence. They can be finite or non-finite. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. JUGGLING THREE TENNIS BALLS AND A CHAINSAW, THE CLOWN IMPRESSED THE HUGE CROWD.&lt;br /&gt;- "three tennis balls and a chainsaw" is the direct object of the verb "juggling" &lt;br /&gt;- "the huge crowd" is the direct object of the verb "impressed" &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MONOTRANSITIVE VERB (MTV)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The classification is very clear for this kind of verb, as it only requires a direct object. There may be more than one direct object, but no indirect object, nor an object complement. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. I LOVE YOU. &lt;br /&gt;- When you love, you love something or somebody (direct object). Without the direct object, the verb makes no sense. &lt;br /&gt;- "you" is the direct object. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. INVESTIGATORS FOUND THE EVIDENCE. &lt;br /&gt;- When you find, you find something or somebody (direct object). Without the direct object, the verb makes no sense. &lt;br /&gt;- "the evidence" is the direct object. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THEY ARE GOING TO SELL PIRATED COPIES OF THE CD AND SOME BOOTLEG DVDS.&lt;br /&gt;- When you sell, you sell something (direct object). Without the direct object, the verb makes no sense. &lt;br /&gt;- In this case there are two direct objects: "pirated copies of the CD" and "some bootleg DVDs".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;DITRANSITIVE VERB (DTV)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While the classification of this kind of verb can be misleading (it sounds as if the prefix “di” denies the transitivity of the verb), a ditransitive verb is a transitive verb. However, it requires both a DIRECT and an INDIRECT object. There may be several objects, indirect and direct, but there must be at least ONE OF EACH. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT SENT ME AN INSURANCE POLICY.&lt;br /&gt;- "me" is the indirect object.&lt;br /&gt;- "an insurance policy" is the direct object.&lt;br /&gt;- It would be strange to say "the human resources department sent me". The verb requires both objects.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SHE GAVE THE GIFT TO ME. &lt;br /&gt;- "to me" is the indirect object (prepositional phrase working as an indirect object).&lt;br /&gt;- "the gift" is the direct object.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE LAWYER TOLD ME TO DROP THE CASE AND GET ON WITH MY LIFE. &lt;br /&gt;- "me" is the indirect object.&lt;br /&gt;- "to drop the case" is the direct object (non-finite noun clause reduced by infinitive working as the direct object). This is what the lawyer told me.&lt;br /&gt;- "get on with my life" is another direct object (non-finite noun clause reduced by infinitive working as the direct object). This is another thing the lawyer told me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;COMPLEX TRANSITIVE VERB (CXTV)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now my friends, we step into troubled waters. This is where I take you on a trip into a world of conflict, a world of discord, a world in which grammarians, young and old, will unsheathe their proVERBial swords and cut each other down, ripping each other’s throats out with their bare teeth. Yes, my friends ...prepare yourselves for the  war of all wars…the battle of the COMPLEX TRANSITIVE VERB ...(dramatic music plays loudly)...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Traditionally, this kind of verb is a transitive verb that MUST have a direct object and CAN have an object complement. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE JUDGE FOUND THE PLEA OUTRAGEOUS. &lt;br /&gt;- "outrageous" is the object  complement. &lt;br /&gt;- "the plea" is the direct object&lt;br /&gt;- Therefore, in this specific case, the verb "find" is considered a complex transitive verb (CXTV). This does NOT mean that "find" is always a complex transitive verb. &lt;br /&gt;- In this case, the verb "find" requires the object complement. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE NEWLY-WEDS PAINTED THE KIDS’ ROOM RED. &lt;br /&gt;- "red" is the object complement.&lt;br /&gt;- "the kids’ room" is the direct object.&lt;br /&gt;- Therefore, in this specific case, the verb "paint" is considered a complex transitive verb (CXTV). This does NOT mean that "paint" is always a complex transitive verb. &lt;br /&gt;- In this case, the verb "paint" does not require the object complement. However, if the object complement is removed, the verb becomes a monotransitive verb. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE POOR WEATHER MADE US STAY HOME. &lt;br /&gt;- "stay home" is the object  complement (non-finite noun clause reduced by the bare infinitive).&lt;br /&gt;- "us" is the direct object.&lt;br /&gt;- Therefore, in this specific case, the verb "make" is considered a complex transitive verb. This does NOT mean that "make" is always a complex transitive verb. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT THINGS...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I find that there could be another possible way to look at the complex transitive verb. When the verb requires a direct object and an adverbial idea, it seems to me that it has a complex transitive feel. In fact, in the link to Syntax from Norway on my blog, there is a definition that refers to this kind of verb as a Ditransitive verb. Let’s see...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. WONDER WOMAN SWEPT DOWN FROM THE SKY AND SAVED ME FROM THE EVIL DOERS. &lt;br /&gt;- "save" requires a direct object because you must "save something or somebody".&lt;br /&gt;The fact that you usually "save something or somebody FROM SOMETHING" makes me feel that this verb requires this extra information (from something). &lt;br /&gt;In the link Syntax from Norway, the grammarians say that the prepositional phrase "from the evil doers" is an OBLIQUE object, and thus the verb is ditransitive (requiring direct and oblique objects). This is a fairly plausible argument. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But, now I put forth my opinion: as the prepositional phrase "from the evil doers" has an adverbial feel to it (an abstract idea of place, maybe - from where...), is it not possible to consider this a kind of complex transitive verb? That is, it requires a direct object, and the accompaniment works similar to an object complement or an oblique object. A verb that requires a direct object and an object complement is a complex transitive verb. Why not consider, then, a verb that requires a direct object and an adverbial idea a complex transitive verb. While the most common linking verb is "to be", other verbs can work as linking verbs (also known as copular verbs).&lt;br /&gt;In order to check if a verb is a linking verb, merely substitute it with the verb "to be". If the sentence reads well, with no drastic change in the sense, the original verb is working as a linking verb.&lt;br /&gt;In essence, the linking verb creates a "kind of descriptive tendency" for the subject complement. That is, the subject complement is "almost describing" the subject.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. AFRICA IS A LARGE CONTINENT. (BE - linking verb)&lt;br /&gt;- "Africa" (subject) is linked to "a large continent" (subject complement).&lt;br /&gt;- "a large continent" describes "Africa"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. BACKPACKING HAS BECOME LESS POPULAR. (BECOME - linking verb)&lt;br /&gt;- "Backpacking is less popular" – "become" can be substituted with the verb "to be".&lt;br /&gt;- "Backpacking" (subject) is linked to "less popular" (subject complement), which describes "Backpacking".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other linking verbs, or copular verbs, are: to appear, to seem, to look (like), to sound (like), to feel, to taste (in the sense of having the taste of), to smell (in the sense of having the smell of) etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. GODFREY SEEMS A LITTLE WORN OUT AFTER THE GAME. (SEEM - linking verb)&lt;br /&gt;- "Godfrey is a little worn out" – "seem" can be substituted with the verb "to be".&lt;br /&gt;- "Godfrey" (subject) is linked to "a little worn out" (subject complement), which describes "Godfrey".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NB: Linking verbs are not always followed by a subject complement. They can link the subject to an adverb.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE BROKER WAS OUT. (BE - linking verb)&lt;br /&gt;- "out" is an adverb. Adverbs cannot be subject complements.&lt;br /&gt;- The subject is linked to an adverb by a linking verb. In this case, the linking verb acts in an "intransitive" manner. DYNAMIC VERBS</title><content type='html'>Stative verbs refer to a state, static condition or unchanging situation, that is, the subject performs no action. These verbs are NOT usually used in the continuous (progressive) form or the passive voice. These verbs do not involve a process. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. IBM HAS OFFICES ALL OVER THE WORLD.&lt;br /&gt;- "to have", in the sense of "to possess" or "to own", is a stative verb. &lt;br /&gt;- It would be wrong to say "IBM is having offices all over the world", as the act of possessing is not a process.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most verbs of perception are stative.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. MOST PEOPLE HATE WORKING ON THE WEEKENDS. &lt;br /&gt;- In English, either "you hate something" or "you don’t". "To hate" is not a process. &lt;br /&gt;- It would be wrong to say "Most people are hating working on the weekends."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE SCHOOL OWNS THREE FARMS IN A NEIGHBORING CITY. &lt;br /&gt;- In English, either "you own something" or "you don’t". "To own" is not a process. &lt;br /&gt;- It would be wrong to say "The school is owning three farms in a neighboring city."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other stative verbs include: to be, to contain, to know, to resemble, to see, to hear, to believe, to understand, to sound, to prefer, to doubt, to mean.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dynamic verbs show actions that can start and finish, besides illustrating process. The subject does the action. Unlike stative verbs, dynamic verbs can be used in the continuous (progressive) form. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THOSE GRADUATE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING THE INS-AND-OUTS OF THE ELECTION PROCESS. &lt;br /&gt;- The verb "to learn" is a dynamic verb as it shows a process being performed by the subject. "To learn" is a process that takes time. &lt;br /&gt;- Stative verbs like "to understand" do not show a process. Either "you understand", or "you don’t". &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. WE ARE PUTTING TOGETHER A SCRAP BOOK WITH PHOTOS OF EVERYONE IN THE CLASS. &lt;br /&gt;- The verb phrase "to put together" is a dynamic verb as it shows a process being performed by the subject. "To put something together" is a process that takes time.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dynamic verbs can be used in the simple form, which does not make them stative. It just means that, in that specific case, they are not emphasizing continuity. The fact that they ARE ABLE TO BE used in the continuous form makes them dynamic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. CROP OWNERS BURN THE CANE FIELDS BEFORE HARVESTING. &lt;br /&gt;- The verb "to burn" is a dynamic verb as it can show a process. &lt;br /&gt;- It IS possible to say "Crop owners are burning the fields", thus proving "burn" is a dynamic verb. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SWome verbs are both stative and dynamic, which means they probably have slightly different meanings (although the verb seems to be the same).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. WE HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT CHANGING THE DÉCOR IN THE LIVING ROOM.&lt;br /&gt;- The verb "to think", in this case, is a dynamic verb as it shows the process of thinking, which may take some time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, "to think", in the sense of an opinion, is a stative verb.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. WE THINK THEY HAVE MADE AN IRREPARABLE MISTAKE. &lt;br /&gt;- Here, the verb "to think" does not show process, but rather an opinion in relation to something. A sentence cannot exist without a main verb (main clause). Every sentence has at least one main verb. Sometimes a single verb idea is constituted by more than one word. This is called a verb phrase.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. BRAZIL WON THE 1994 WORLD CUP (WON is the main verb).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. AUSTRALIA WAS DISCOVERED BY ENGLISH NAVIGATORS (WAS DISCOVERED is the main verb – verb phrase). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. MOVING STEALTHILY ACROSS THE ROOM, THE BURGLAR TOOK ALL THE VALUABLES. &lt;br /&gt;- There are two verbs ("MOVING" and "TOOK") This is not a verb phrase. &lt;br /&gt;- "took" is the main verb because it is finite and part of an independent clause. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE PRINTER THEY BOUGHT WAS EXPENSIVE.&lt;br /&gt;- "bought" is a verb, and "was" is a verb. &lt;br /&gt;- As there are two different verb ideas, this cannot be considered a verb phrase. &lt;br /&gt;- "was" is the main verb because it is finite and part of an independent clause. &lt;br /&gt;- "they bought" is a finite restrictive adjective clause (dependent clause)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SHE MUSTN’T HAVE BEEN THINKING WHEN SHE TURNED LEFT WITHOUT CHECKING FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC. &lt;br /&gt;- There are two verb ideas. &lt;br /&gt;- "mustn’t have been thinking" is the main verb because it is finite and part of an independent clause. The subject and the verb agree in person (1st, 2nd or 3rd) and number (singular or plural). A subject can be a pronoun, noun, noun phrase or noun clause.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. HE DOESN’T SUSPECT A THING. &lt;br /&gt;- The pronoun "He" is in the 3rd person singular. The verb phrase doesn’t suspect agrees in person and number.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes, the subject is not a pronoun, but rather a noun phrase. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. TWO PAGES OF PRECISE INFORMATION ARE BETTER THAN 300 PAGES OF INACCURATE NONSENSE. &lt;br /&gt;- The noun phrase "Two pages of precise information" is in the 3rd person plural. The verb are agrees in person and number. &lt;br /&gt;- By substituting a noun phrase with the word "this/these", it is easy to verify if it can work as a subject (These are better than 300 pages of inaccurate nonsense.).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes there is a verb inside the subject. In this case, the subject is known as a noun clause. A way to make sure of the subject is to find the main verb of the sentence. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THROWING A PARTY IS MORE WORK THAN YOU THINK.&lt;br /&gt;- The noun clause "Throwing a party" is the subject. It is the 3rd person singular. The main verb is agrees in person and number. It is a non-finite noun clause reduced by the gerund.&lt;br /&gt;- By substituting a noun clause with the word "this/these", it is easy to verify if it can work as a subject (This is more work than you think).&lt;br /&gt;- "Throwing a party" may also be seen as a gerund being used as a noun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A subject can be compound.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE SHEER SIZE OF THE ANIMAL AND THE WAY IT MOVES MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO KEEP IN CONFINED PLACES. &lt;br /&gt;- "The sheer size of the animal" and "the way it moves" are coordinated (linked) by the coordinating conjunction "and". &lt;br /&gt;- "The sheer size of the animal" contains no verb; therefore, it is a phrase. It can be substituted with the word "this", proving it is a noun phrase.  &lt;br /&gt;- "The way it moves" has a verb, but the part with the verb is a subordinate clause to the noun phrase "the way"; It could be written "The way (that) it moves". "(That) it moves" is subordinate to the noun phrase "the way", the nucleus. &lt;br /&gt;- In this sentence, we see two noun phrases linked by a coordinating conjunction, resulting in a compound subject.&lt;br /&gt;- The compound subject is in the 3rd person plural. The verb "make" agrees in person and number. &lt;br /&gt;- By substituting the nouns phrases with the word "this/these" (that/those), it is easy to verify if the verb is conjugated correctly (This and that make it difficult to keep in confined places).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes the subject can come after the verb. That is, the clause has the function of a noun. Noun clauses (nominal clauses) can be finite or non-finite and are always dependent clauses (subordinate).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THAT THE SUPERBOWL IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS IN AMERICAN SPORTS CANNOT BE DISPUTED. &lt;br /&gt;- "That the Superbowl is one of the most important events in American sports" is the subject. As it contains a verb (is), it is a clause, however, it is not the main clause.&lt;br /&gt;- This group of words represents a noun. As it has a verb (experimenting), it is a clause, however, it is not the main clause.&lt;br /&gt;- This group of words represents a noun. It can be substituted with the noun "this" (What I found most delightful at the vineyards was this).&lt;br /&gt;- As the noun clause has no subject and the verb is not conjugated (experimenting - gerund), it is classified as a non-finite noun clause reduced by the gerund.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THEY SWORE TO SETTLE THE SCORE. THEY SWORE (THAT) THEY WOULD SETTLE THE SCORE.&lt;br /&gt;- In the first example, "to settle the score" is the direct object. As it contains a verb (to settle), it is a clause, however, it is not the main clause.&lt;br /&gt;- This group of words represents a noun. When this occurs, the group of words is known as a noun phrase. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THREE INTRIGUING FELLOWS SWEET-TALKED THE MANAGER INTO A FREE LUNCH.&lt;br /&gt;- "Three intriguing fellows" is a noun phrase made up of a determiner "three", a premodifier "intriguing" and a noun "fellows'. The noun "fellows" is the nucleus (head) of the phrase. See below:  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Three intriguing fellows      = noun phrase&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Three (determiner); intriguing (adjective - premodifier); fellows (nucleus)&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;- "the manager" is a noun phrase made up of a determiner "the" and a noun "manager". The noun "manager" is the nucleus (head) of the phrase.  &lt;br /&gt;- "a free lunch" is a noun phrase made up of a determiner "a", a premodifier "free" and a noun "lunch'. The noun "lunch" is the nucleus (head) of the phrase.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE TRUNK OF THE CAR WAS DESTROYED IN THE CRASH.&lt;br /&gt;- "The trunk of the car" is a noun phrase made up of a determiner "the", a noun "trunk" and a postmodifier "of the car" (prepositional phrase working as and adjective phrase). The noun "trunk" is the nucleus (head) of the phrase.  &lt;br /&gt;- "the crash" is a noun phrase made up of a determiner "the" and a noun "crash". The noun "crash" is the nucleus (head) of the phrase.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. SOMEBODY CLEVER, QUICK AND ON THE BALL MUST HAVE SNEAKED INTO THE ROOM OVERNIGHT. &lt;br /&gt;- "Somebody clever, quick and on the ball" is a noun phrase made up of a noun "somebody" and the postmodifiers "clever", "quick" and "on the ball". The noun "somebody" is the nucleus (head) of the phrase.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;e.g. THE BOOKSHELVES (THAT) WE INSTALLED YESTERDAY FELL DOWN. &lt;br /&gt;- "The bookshelves (that) we installed yesterday" is a noun phrase made up of a determiner "the", a noun "bookshelves" and an adjective clause "(that) we installed yesterday". The noun "bookshelves" is the nucleus (head) of the phrase.
